eBay sales surge in unexpected dress category

Australians are seeking pre-loved wedding dresses for their big day, according to the latest eBay data.

In the past three months, sales of pre-loved beaded wedding dresses have grown by 186%, with pre-loved sleeveless wedding dresses growing by 171% and pre-loved lace wedding dresses by 61%.

According to the online marketplace, it’s not just bridal gowns dominating pre-loved wedding purchases. Sales of pre-loved bow ties have quadrupled by 426%, while pre-loved veils have increased by 131%.

eBay Australia’s Brooke Eichhorn said as cost of living pressures continue, eBay is in a prime position to capitalize as consumers seek bargains on discretionary items.

“With many brides and grooms wearing their wedding attire only once, shopping for pre-loved items is a great alternative to buying new,” Eichhorn said.

“[It] often comes at a fraction of the price without compromising on quality – especially with more Aussies buying multiple outfits for the big day, inspired by celebrities and the Royals.”

Eichhorn continued saying the high price points on wedding dresses is helping Australians accrue extra cash “to fund honeymoons and newborns,” while some brides prefer to hold onto dresses for sentimental reasons.

“People are also making more socially conscious choices that contribute to sustainable living and give their special pieces a second life,” Eichhorn finished. “Whether buying or selling pre-loved, it’s exciting to see Aussies participating in the circular economy.”
