The choice of fast food is so great these days that it is difficult to know where to start when trying to find a place to eat.
Gone are the days when you actually had to go into a fast food restaurant and speak to someone in person – now it’s all about drive-thru or ordering from the comfort of your bed using the app.
But human interaction isn’t the only thing with the advent of the 21st century.

The golden arches and fried chicken may have been around for a while, but takeaway joint Wimpy has been in the UK a full two decades longer and is showing no sign of going anytime soon anyway.

In fact, a recent investment program has resulted in many of the franchise restaurants being upgraded to the company’s new “Shift” design, which builds on the brand’s strong heritage and nostalgic traditions while sporting vibrant new colors, furniture and uniforms .
Wimpy has also taken a step forward by introducing home delivery – more than half of its restaurants now offer home delivery services through apps like Just Eat.

Given that the fast food chain has existed in the UK for 67 years, it seems remarkable that I had never heard of it, so I thought it was time to try it.
The basic red and white color scheme and old-school decor of Wimpy in Maidstone were a bit comforting.

It reminded me of days I’d spent at McDonald’s as a kid before they were upgraded to a more classy green uniform and better furniture.
I was pleasantly surprised to see a decent variety of vegetarian options on the menu, including a Spicy Bean Burger and a Southern Fried Quorn Burger.
A quick Google search reveals that some restaurants are now even serving a vegan Beyond Meat patty burger – proving that Wimpy is trying to keep up with the times.
They also offer all-day breakfast, jacket potatoes, salads, toasties, and a huge selection of retro sundaes and sweet treats.
A nostalgic favorite is the Brown Derby, a Wimpy classic that consists of a warm donut with ice cream, chocolate sauce, and mini fudge pieces.

The staff at Wimpy in Maidstone couldn’t have been friendlier, the moment I walked into the restaurant they greeted me with happy faces and smiles that are seldom seen in fast food restaurants.
Nostalgic
As much as we all avoid talking to people at times, it is much more pleasant to interact with a person than with a machine.
Unfortunately my first experience with Wimpy was let down by the fact that they closed at 4pm and stopped serving food when I arrived.
I was looking forward to my nostalgic meal at this point, so it was a bit of a disappointment, but the staff were very apologetic and offered me an ice cream instead.
You can’t get more nostalgic than a Mr. Whippy with flake, so I was very happy with the result.
Although it was close to closing time, the staff was in no hurry to push customers out and tried to keep the kids entertained in the restaurant.

Wimpy is clearly trying to appeal to the next generation without losing its nostalgia.
It was comforting to see a new generation enjoying a snack that came before my parents were born.
I will definitely visit Wimpy again and hope to test the food next time.
