I think it’s safe to say that everyone loves a burger – whether it’s vegetarian, vegan, or a traditional beef patty, there’s nothing more satisfying than greasy takeaway food.
And Kent isn’t exactly deprived of options when it comes to restaurants and takeaways.
In fact, deciding where to get a bite to eat can be an overwhelming decision when you’re as spoiled for choice as we are.
The county is home to seven Michelin-starred restaurants, but the public’s ratings are most important to us.

And one of the first places to go for advice on choosing a restaurant is through the trusted bank of TripAdvisor reviews.
This time we decided to find out what you rated as the best restaurant in Canterbury – and one restaurant prevailed.
The infamous BRG may be relatively new to the area, but it has certainly made a good impression so far.

The take-away burger received the highest rating of five stars on Tripadvisor – with just two negative reviews out of 98.

Tripadvisor users have left rave reviews, with one calling the restaurant “the best burgers in Kent” and another saying their take-out was “the best burger of the year”.
The restaurant has been praised for its large selection of vegetarian dishes, friendly service and high quality dishes.
Delicious smell
As a vegetarian who has experienced some pretty seedy burgers in my time, I decided to put Notorious BRG to the test and order one myself.
The takeaway was off the main street in Canterbury, on Castle Street.
It’s so small that it could be easily missed if the delicious smell wasn’t blowing through the windows.
When you enter the takeaway, there are three bar stools on the right to wait for your order or to enjoy your food inside if you don’t want to take it out.
Despite the small space, a lot of effort was put into the establishment.

The blue-green walls, the table-style menus and the Jack Daniels bottles, which have been converted into hand disinfectant dispensers, give the restaurant a retro feel.
I was pleasantly surprised to see a sign saying the entire menu is vegan if you wish, so I immediately ordered a vegan Mac Daddy and a serving of vegan cheesy bacon fries.

The vegan Mac Daddy consists of a vegan Beyond Meat Patty, vegan Mac n Cheese, vegan Cheddar, Smokey BBQ Sauce, lettuce and tomato.
Doubtful
And the vegan Cheesy Bacon Fries contained smoked, streaky vegan bacon, vegan cheddar, vegan burger sauce and spring onions.
I was a bit skeptical about vegan cheese and bacon as I have never found a fake cheese that looks like the real thing and vegetarian bacon usually leaves a terrible taste in your mouth, but I thought I would give them the benefit of doubt.
The service was friendly and quick, and I could watch my food cook behind the counter and my burger freshly cooked on the grill.
Notorious BRG also offers a range of giant milkshakes and although I was tempted to add one to my order, after seeing the size of the food portions, I decided against it and opted for a Diet Coke instead.
My order was ready in less than five minutes and neatly packed in a brown paper bag with wooden cutlery.
I decided to find a nice spot to enjoy my meal in the sun and made my way to Canterbury’s Westgate Gardens.
I put myself in my fries first, which were the perfect balance between crispy and fluffy.
Delicious

I didn’t depend on the vegan cheese, but the burger sauce was delicious.
By far the most impressive part of the side dish, however, was the crispy pieces of bacon that were sprinkled on top.
Can’t say I’ve ever tried real bacon, but this one was way tastier than any vegetarian bacon I’ve ever seen – crispy and chewy at the same time, with a nice smoky note.
The burger was so huge it was almost impossible to eat it with my hands so I decided to slice it open using the cutlery provided instead.

The Beyond Meat Patty was perfectly prepared and perfectly complemented by the sweet BBQ sauce and the soft brioche bun.
Again, I wasn’t a huge fan of the vegan Mac n Cheese as it was a little too sickly for my tastes, but I think that’s more a reflection of the lack of good vegan cheeses on the market than Notorious BRG
But then…
Unfortunately, when trying to wash down my meal with a refreshing Diet Coke, I realized I had received a glass bottle that I couldn’t open without a bottle opener – so it might be worth packing one if you’re thinking of getting one Drinks to your order.
Overall, I was very satisfied with my food and felt accordingly full, which is exactly what you want from a burger and fries.

If I ordered again I would probably replace the vegan cheese with regular cheddar, but that’s just my personal preference.
The infamous BRG may be relatively new to Canterbury, but it is certainly making waves in the food industry, so I would highly recommend checking it out while it’s still fairly quiet.
